Welcome back to Tie-lopnik, where I tie my tie a certain way and then tell you about it! Yesterday, we covered my personal favorite:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

So, today, lets cover my least favorite! This is the "four-in-hand" knot. Largely asymmetrical and extremely easy to tie, it is the most basic of knots.

Advantages: can be tied with one hand, very easy

Disadvantages: a soft knot, lacks sophistication, too asymmetrical for my tastes, too basic for my tastes, and way way too common

when I have to wear a long tie, and that is very rare, I rock the 4 in hand. Looks like shit, but gets the job done. Here is 505 the way it should be, with a bow, at a wedding with my kiddos

dude I haven't tied a tie in so long that I wonder if I could even do it right now. I might get performance anxiety if I was late for a meeting and fail

Also like I said the 4 is just my personal least favorite. Lots of people like it.

In Utah I call that the Missionary Knot. I loathe it personally. I am a full windsor knot all the way kind of guy.

I've honestly never tied a four-in-hand....I seem to default to a double windsor most days.

what is your favorite tie brand? I strictly wear Brooks Brothers and think they are the best

Eh, as long as its a quality tie with a nice design I'm not too picky about brand, but if I was I would say Brooks Bros or Ralph Lauren.

I was taught to never trust a grown man in a bow-tie, but having recently moved to the South Carolina coast I'm really trying to accept them. I'm doing better in social situations like weddings but in business situations I just can't do it, I just feel like somebody is going to get fucked over by this guy.

The 4iH has its place. Some may say on 5 year old boys and Ellen Degeneres, but whatever. I'll use the 4iH as a way to say "I couldn't be bothered to care much this morning, and don't expect that to change as the day progresses."

By the way, I'm really digging this series.

luckily I rarely have to wear a tie for business, and I go long for that. Most of my business is conducted in polo shirts and khakis/slacks. I feel the same way, unless you are a doctor or a professor. But when I put a suit on for a personal gig, bow tie all the way

I actually just did!

I untied and it took a couple to get the length right...it feels different. But, I'm going to stick with it for a few days.

4inhand 4lyfe

Wear it everyday. Pratts look too squatty, Windors look obnoxious without a spread collar...which looks dumb on my skinny, long neck (seriously, I look like an ostrich with a big knot on a spread collar).

Narrow collars (or button downs if I'm not meeting clients) and four in hand for me. Bonus, easiest to tie without a mirror.

I think last time I had a tie was a funeral 2 years ago. I only own a couple, but with a couple weddings next year I think I'll try out some of your suggestions instead of whatever simple knot I was taught as a youngster going to church.

4 years ago when I got married I only opted for suit, vest my mom made, & a tie that matched. My brother is likely going to follow suit and tie instead of renting a tux. Why spend extra money when we already have some nice clothes. (That I only wear at weddings or funerals). Thanks for posting, I'll keep an eye out.

Also, my suggestion is learn to tie on your knee! I know it sounds weird but once I started I couldn't go back. I am so precise on me knee I feel like a tie surgeon.

Haha, we have similar opinions of the four in hand.

And great! Wait till it gets really intense! Would you like a little teaser?

Dude, four in hands look weird on wide collars in the first place! And start tying on your knee, you will never need a mirror again.

Merovingians are nice...for amateurs. Have a little Eldredge:

Of course, this knot will have its own feature day in Tie-lopnik.

Haha, no no, wasn't saying I wore 4-in-hand on a spread collar, just that spread collars/wide knots look dumb on me.

I can't slip ties over my head without screwing up my hair. It's a personal flaw I suppose.

Touche. Looking forward to it. Also, maybe consider including the material of the tie and how heavy an inner liner it has, if it has one at all. That can also play an important factor in the final result. Might be helpful if people want to try some of these knots.

I'm going to buy both of those.

I tend to go with this type of knot. I'm tall and it's difficult to keep a tie long enough through my torso. More complicated knots tend to shorten it up too much that I look like a 8 year old kid with an ill-fitting tie on. (Except if I'm wearing a vest with the suit.) The "four in hand" let's me keep the tie long enough that I don't look ridiculous.

I try to avoid wearing ties whenever possible. If I have to wear a tie I try to make it a bow tie. If I have to wear a regular tie, it's a Windsor knot but I almost always wear a coat when I wear a regular tie.

Yeah, that's a good point. The shelby also doesnt use too much fabric, you might be able to make it work. I'm 5'8, so I've got tie for days.

Kinja'd!!! macanamera > RockThrillz89

Well every single tie will be silk, but I'll mention that and the liner from now on.

Hmmm, interesting.

I think the Shelby is destined for good dimple-dom as well. I may just have to follow a day behind you on what you tie. Although, I'm in no hurry to go to a four-in-hand.

Word. I just mention it because since it is getting colder, some people will be rocking the cashmere/wool ties. Don't know what you have on the tie rack, plus I'm curious about what others are wearing. Virtually all my ties are either printed or woven silk. Some of my bow ties are cotton. Ties are my not so secret obsession.

Hehe. 6'3" here. I'll try the shelby next occasion. I'll try to cheat the fabric just a little bit on the shelby.
